Classical Tantra refers to the lineages and practices of Tantra that originated in South Asia, predating Hinduism, and later morphing into Hinduism and moving into Tibet to become Tantric Buddhism (between 800 and 1100 c.e.). The origins of Tantra are in the matriarchal Goddess worshipping oral traditions of South Asia that predate the Indus Valley civilizations. These ancient pre-patriarchal traditions continued to exist and flourish side by side with the larger textual traditions of Brahmanical Hinduism and various Buddhist traditions in South Asia. Remnants of some of these early forms of Tantra can be found in contemporary South Asian religious communities as among the Bauls, the Shaktas, the Shaivites, and other Goddess worshipping groups.
