BusinessWeek has pronounced the emergence of the Power Vegan – a growing number of America's most powerful CEOs and alpha males have become vegan. Steve Wynn, Mort Zuckerman, Russell Simmons, Ford's Chairman of the Board Bill Ford, Apple CEO Steve Jobs, Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg, Twitter co-founder Biz Stone, venture capitalist Joi Ito, Whole Foods CEO John Mackey and most recently, Bill Clinton – are now going vegan while asserting their superiority over the pecking order and rest of the food chain.
The article notes that veganism isn't cheap – which makes it ideal for the rich and powerful to indulge in. Ingrid E. Newkirk, president of People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals adds, "CEOs are smart. There just hadn't been enough exposure for people to glom onto this trend, but now, the information is everywhere."
Vegas mogul Steve Wynn agrees and bought 10,000 copies of the book Eating, one for each of his employees. He's also persuaded most of his senior management to go vegan, making it possible to insure that whenever there's a business dinner... it's vegan. He's even making his restaurants offer vegan alternatives.
BusinessWeek also noted that the process of a CEO "going vegan" usually involves the acquisition of a vegan second wife. For example, Rupert Murdoch and former Viacom CEO Tom Freston, who both recently married pro-vegan and much younger wives, were slowly converted to vegan diets.
So rich and powerful CEOs are no longer happy with the latest Gulfstream jet, or to marry a much younger Asian woman... they hunger for a nice filling vegan lunch, after working up an appetite laying off 500 employees.
