altOne of the best shows on television, Trueblood, just went polyamorous. The HBO series is based on The Southern Vampire Mysteries series of novels by Charlaine Harris, detailing the co-existence of vampires and humans in Bon Temps, a fictional, small town in the state of Louisiana. The series centers on Sookie Stackhouse (played by actress Anna Paquin), a telepathic waitress who falls in love with vampire Bill Compton (Stephen Moyer) and Eric Northman (Alexander Skarsgård).

Within the fictional universe depicted in the show, which acknowledges as reality that supernatural creatures - such as vampires, telepaths, werewolves and shapeshifters - exist. Two years prior to the events taking place during the series, scientists in Japan invent a synthetic form of blood called "Tru Blood". No longer having to rely on human blood to survive, vampires are able to integrate themselves (or "mainstream") into human society.

altThe premise is a thinly veiled allegory for alternative lifestyles, as the struggle for vampire equality in True Blood has been interpreted as a metaphor for civil rights in general, and gay rights in particular. Several phrases in the series are borrowed and adapted from expressions used against and about LGBT people, such as "God Hates Fangs" (God Hates Fags) and "Coming out of the coffin" (coming out of the closet).

In Episode 9 of Season 4, the show finally broached the subject of radical honesty and polyamory. Sookie Stackhouse has a dream, and both of her lovers are present. When both telepathically ask why they're
both present in her dream, she replies, "What? Everyone can hear everyone now?" This intimates that a new level of radical honesty and open communication has been achieved. After she stops her two altvampire loves from (re-)killing each other, she said, "This is MY dream, and both of you need to listen to me. I could be dreaming about anything... swimming with dolphins or eating a whole pie without consequences... but instead, I'm here with the two of you, and that's gotta mean something. I think I'm in love with both of you. All my life, I've been this self-conscious good little girl who's too scared to think outside the box. Especially when it comes to love and sex. But as of right now, I'm putting that little girl behind me. [I propose] that I can love both of you. I don't have to be yours, or yours... I'm proposing that the two of you... be mine. I love you, both of you, and I'm asking you to love me back. Together. It's either both of you, or nothing at all."

Accompanied by the visual of Anna Paquin in red lingerie, it's the best version of "the talk" of all time.

Hooray for True Blood!
